Cells and Cities
From the window I see a city; at thirty thousand feet people are invisible but their presence is still revealed by their structures.
Through a microscope, I will never suspect that the driving force behind these harmonious, geometric patterns is the chaotic drama of minuscule creatures; their wakes, weddings, sports and wars are incomprehensible from the heights.
Feelings can’t be deciphered from the altitude; it is a different context which presents a different set of relationships between the creatures and their environment in which there is no space for emotions.
In the same way, the function and existence of the liver are out of reach to the cell.
